Test and Trace Support Payments Available in Brent and Harrow

If you have tested positive for coronavirus or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive, you may be entitled to a new Test and Trace Support Payment of £500. This is for residents on lower incomes who cannot work from home and have lost income as a result. Self-isolation is a legal duty for all those who test positive for COVID-19 or are identified by NHS Test and Trace as a close contact since 28 September 2020.

To be eligible for the Test and Trace Support Payment, an individual must:

  • have been asked to self-isolate and been provided a with an 8 digit number by NHS Test and Trace either because they’ve tested positive for coronavirus or have recently been in close contact with someone who has tested positive;
  • be employed or self-employed;
  • be unable to work from home and will lose income as a result; and
  • be currently receiving Universal Credit, Working Tax Credit, income-based Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit and/or Pension Credit.

London in Tier 2: Covid-19 level high

The number of COVID-19 cases is increasing rapidly across London and we are now in danger of losing control of this deadly virus.

This means new local restrictions are necessary to get this under control to protect you, our NHS and the local economy. From Saturday 17 October all of London, including Brent and Harrow, were moved into the high level of alert.

The most significant new rule is that you must not meet socially with friends and family indoors, unless you live with them or have formed a support bubble together. This applies in your home, and at pubs or restaurants.

You can continue to see friends and family, who you don’t live with, in outdoor spaces, such as parks, but you must not meet in a group of more than six – including children.

Please work from home if you can and reduce the number of journeys you make. To help stop the spread of coronavirus it is vital that we all continue to:

  • Wash hands regularly
  • Wear a face covering
  • Keep a safe distance from anyone not in your household or support bubble.

Look out for the symptoms of coronavirus which are: a high temperature; a new, continuous cough or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste. If you have these symptoms, stay at home and apply for a test.

This is a difficult and worrying time for many of us. I know how many sacrifices you have made, to protect your loved ones, friends and neighbours. But a big effort from us at this moment can save lives, protect the local economy and stop the big growth in cases seen in other parts of the country.

Voting set to commence in Brent and Harrow to select Labour’s candidate for the London 2020 elections

Voting is set to begin in Brent and Harrow to select Labour’s candidate for the London 2020 elections.

Current London Assembly Member for the area Navin Shah is stepping down from the role at the forthcoming election and is supporting Krupesh Hirani to be Labour’s next candidate at the May 2020 elections.

Labour Party Members who have been members since September 2018 are paid up to date will have the opportunity to vote for Krupesh Hirani to be the Party’s candidate in Brent and Harrow at the London elections in May 2020. Voting will be from 5th February to noon on 19th February 2020. Members will receive their ballots by email on 5th February. Members who have not submitted email details to the Party as part of their membership application or do not have one will be sent a physical postal ballot.

Krupesh Hirani made it on to the ballot after securing the most nominations from Constituency Labour Parties and trade unions and affiliated socialist societies over the 2019 summer period. The selection campaign was then paused by the Labour Party following the general election and the understandable priority given to select MPs for the December 2019 elections.

Krupesh Hirani launches City Hall campaign

Cllr Krupesh Hirani will seek the Labour nomination for the seat of Brent and Harrow in next year’s Greater London Authority elections.

Cllr Hirani’s announcement follows the decision by the Labour incumbent, Navin Shah, to stand down after twelve years in the role. Assembly Member Shah has publicly endorsed Cllr Hirani’s candidacy, backing Brent’s Cabinet Member for Health, Culture & Leisure to replace him at next year’s election.

Born, raised and educated in Brent, Krupesh has represented Dudden Hill ward since 2010, and has served as the Lead Member for Health since 2012. He previously worked for the Harrow-based spinal injury charity, Aspire, before joining the MS Society as their Regional Officer for London in 2015.

Outlining his priorities for Brent and Harrow, Cllr Hirani has highlighted the need to protect police numbers, improve the accessibility of public transport and lead the fight against cuts to local health services. Other commitments include the introduction of a Young People’s working group to facilitate better youth engagement across the two boroughs to bring issues forward to the Mayor, as well as improving air quality in some of the area’s most polluted neighbourhoods.

Endorsers of Cllr Hirani’s campaign include MPs Dawn Butler (Brent Central) and Gareth Thomas (Harrow West), as well as the leaders of both Brent and Harrow councils, Cllr Muhammed Butt and Cllr Graham Henson. He is also backed by the GMB trade union.

Announcing his intention to stand, Cllr Hirani said:

“I’m standing to be Labour’s candidate because I believe Brent and Harrow deserve a representative who really understands the challenges facing our communities. Our area has seen enormous change over the past decade, and I am committed to giving local residents a strong voice in City Hall – a voice that will fight to protect the things we all care about.

“Over the past decade, we have seen huge changes across Brent and Harrow that have helped to unlock new opportunities. I want to make sure that everyone is able to take advantage of those opportunities, and am committed to working closely with residents from every corner of Brent and Harrow to help our communities realise their full potential.

“It would be an honour to serve the people of Brent and Harrow, and an opportunity to give back to a community that has given me so much.”
