Young people are our future. As Cabinet lead in Brent overseeing the London Borough of Culture I have put young people at the heart of our programme. With cuts to education, the withdrawal of Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), trebling of tuition fees and the Government wedded to a hard Brexit, it is easy for young people to rightfully feel that the state does not care.
Even during the Coronavirus period, the Government has further attacked our young people with the exams crisis they created which caused them and their families so much anxiety.
I have a proven track record of engaging communities that do not usually engage with traditional services and genuinely involving them to shape and deliver services.
Young people must be part of the process from the very start if we are to find worthwhile solutions that they can truly be proud of.
I have created a Young People’s steering group for Brent and Harrow that will help to give young people the opportunity to take their issues to the Mayor and give them a voice in City Hall. The group is representative of all communities across Brent an Harrow and works with young people across both Boroughs to respond, design and develop policies for Councils, City Hall and Government to implement.
I will champion young people on key issues such as housing, crime and community safety, education, skills and jobs.
